The popularity of electric cars is soaring. And electric driving is something we’ll all have to get used to, because in less than 10 years it will no longer be possible to buy a fossil-fuel driven car. But the recycling industry is keeping up. It’s already the case that the lead from starter batteries has to be recycled in a fully circular way and there is a directive in the pipeline that will mandate the same for the raw materials in drive batteries. And we have a long way to go.

Due to an increase in the number of electric cars on the roads, coupled with the disadvantages associated with most of the battery packs that are used in them, ongoing efforts to develop promising new battery technologies have been intensified. Among others, the solid-state battery is showing great potential.

Europe is making progress in the area of recycling drive batteries. On 1 July, 2023, the new Battery Regulation, the successor to the current Battery Directive, will come into force.
