Car recycling

The composition of cars is changing and this raises a number of questions for the car-recycling chain. For example, which of the recovered raw materials will be suitable for reuse by car manufacturers? What else can be reused? And how can we make sure that we will still be able to reuse materials from end-of-life cars in future?

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE EVALUATION OF THE

ELV directive?

No less than nine per cent of all the plastics produced in Europe are used in car production. Yet the ELV Directive still hasn’t set specific rules for the recycling and reuse of plastics. And this, despite the fact that the circularity we hope to achieve by 2050 calls for stringent and specific targets. Perhaps they’ll be included in the next update of the Directive?

THE NEW NORMAL

Used parts

The days when it was standard practice for a garage to install a brand-new part during a repair have been well and truly relegated to the past. Used parts have become the new normal. First of all, check whether a second-hand part, which is often just as good as a new one, is available. And only if it’s not available, order that new one. It’s more sustainable, and cheaper.

Live- longer

People want to live longer, but we’ll need to change our behaviour. ARN is making a substantial contribution to this by gainfully reusing over 98 per cent of every end-of-life car. If the planet thrives for longer, people will too.

“The circular car tyre is on its way”

Making new tyres from old. That’s the ambition of Maarten van Randeraat, founder and owner of Granuband. Technically, it’s already possible. But first, consumers, compounders and producers have to be persuaded to adopt the required new mindset.

FROM DISASSEMBLY TO SHREDDED MATERIAL

Getting a grip on scrapped cars

Before ARN can accurately ascertain what the recycling performance is, it’s important to know exactly where end-of-life vehicles are in the recycling chain. “As ARN, it’s the only way we can achieve our recycling targets,” insists ARN Project Manager Rob van der Linden.

EXPERT INTERVIEWS

Why not use more recyclates?

All-too-often car manufacturers ignore recyclates. Recycled materials, they reason, are more expensive and of lower quality than virgin raw materials. Moreover, they think that the supply is limited and delivery uncertain. All this begs the question of exactly what will it take for car producers to start using recyclates more often than virgin raw materials?
